→Es scheint wie ein Zufall, dass die Periode des Jura zu allererst in dem gleichnamigen Mittelgebirge festgelegt wurde. Wären die englischen Geologen, die schließlich die ersten Vorarbeiten geleistet hatten, etwas mehr auf die Errichtung eines eigenen wissenschaftlichen “Empires” bedacht gewesen, wären sie sicher die ersten gewesen, die dieses Zeitalter der grauen Vorzeit abgesteckt und ihm einen Namen gegeben hätten. Diese Periode würde dann bestimmt nicht Jura heißen, sondern Dorset oder Cotswold, oder vielleicht sogar Yorkshire. Aber würden diese Namen den gleichen poetischen Nachklang haben wie “Jura”? Hätten die bekannten Filme, in denen grimmige Dinosaurier auftreten, unter dem Namen “Cotswoldic Park” den gleichen internationalen Erfolg gehabt? Über diesen Punkt könnte man sich durchaus in sozio-geologischen Spekulationen ergehen.

Für die, die es interessiert und noch nicht wussten: Geologischen Perioden oder auch Gesteine werden häufig nach der Lokation (z.B. der Grafschaft Devon in Südengland oder dem Juragebirge) benannt, in der sie massenhaft auftreten oder zuerst gefunden oder beschrieben wurden.
